Climate Of Costa Rica

The climate of Costa Rica is strangely varied for somewhere so close to the equator. There are two reasons for this - firstly Costa Rica is quite hilly and so this splits up the country into smaller compartments, plus providing the differences in height (and hence temperature). Secondly Costa Rica has two coasts - one in the Caribbean, one on the Pacific side.

Generally speaking Costa Rica has a dry season from around December time to April which is the best time to visit and the rainy season starts to come in May time and acrry on for quite some months. The country is generally warm though this varies greatly with where you are.

As an example, the high-altitude areas like Monte Verde which is literally in the clouds at some points, can be quite chilly at times. I found myself wearing a jacket if I was out in the cloud foret early in the day, though by mid morning it was just too hot and humid for it. Evenings are pleasant but you will likely need covers at night.

Other lower areas like Arenal, or the coastal areas tend to be a lot hotter. Samara on the Pacific coast is almost unbearably hot and without air conditioning and a swimming pool in my hotel I would have been very grunpy - and I like it hot - so imagine so hit it must be there!

The Caribbean side tends to be more green and lush until the mid way point, with the Pacific coast being drier. Guanacaste in the north east of Costa Rica is the driest area of all and looks like a different country when you enter it, whilst the Monte Verde cloud forest in moist even in the hottest sunshine.
